What Is a Murder Mystery Word Search?
A murder mystery word search combines two classic puzzle formats into one: the grid-based word search and the deductive murder mystery. Your goal is not just to find hidden words — it is to uncover a killer.
Every case in Murdsearch Mysteries gives you a 15×15 letter grid loaded with hidden words. Most of them are visible in the clue list on the side. But one word is deliberately left off the list: the murder method. After finding all the listed words, the leftover letters in the grid spell it out — and once you know the method, you can name the killer, the weapon, and the location.
Step 1 — Read the Case Briefing
Every case opens with a short briefing. It sets the scene: a time, a place, a victim, and a list of suspects. Read it carefully — it is not just flavour text. The suspect names, the setting, and the backstory all contain clues that point toward who did it and where.
Pay attention to any names that appear more than once in the briefing. Repeat mentions are rarely accidental.
Step 2 — Search the Grid for Listed Words
Words can be hidden in any of eight directions: left to right, right to left, top to bottom, bottom to top, and all four diagonals. Experienced detectives scan diagonals first — most beginners skip them and miss obvious finds.
To select a word, click or drag from the first letter to the last. The word highlights as you drag, and locks in green when it matches a word on the list. A strikethrough appears on the found word in your clue list.
Tip: if you are stuck, look for uncommon letters first — J, Q, X, Z, and double letters like TT or LL are easy anchors.
Step 3 — Decode the Leftover Letters
Once all listed words are found, the letters that were never part of any word remain highlighted in the grid. Read them left to right, top to bottom, and they spell the missing word: the murder method.
This is the most satisfying moment in every case. The method could be anything — POISON, GARROTE, DROWNING, BLUNT FORCE — and knowing it narrows the suspect pool dramatically.
Step 4 — Name the Killer, Method, and Location
With the murder method in hand, cross-reference the case briefing. Who had access to that method? Who had motive? Who was present at the scene?
Type your answer into the three boxes: Killer, Method, and Location. You get one shot. The answer is checked server-side — we never send the solution to your browser, so there is no way to cheat by inspecting the page source.
If you are right, the case closes and you earn XP toward your detective rank. If not, the case stays open until you solve it.
Tips for Solving Cases Faster
- Start diagonals: Most players miss diagonal words on first pass. Get them early.
- Use the timer wisely: Your solve time is recorded. Pause if you need to think; do not rush and waste your one answer attempt.
- Read before you search: 60 seconds with the briefing saves 10 minutes of guessing later.
- Notice what is not there: If a suspect is absent from the briefing after the first mention, that is suspicious.
- Trust the method: Once you find the leftover word, the killer usually becomes obvious. Do not overthink it.
