July 2026 Leaderboard Recap
July was the most competitive month since the leaderboard launched. Over 3,400 cases were solved globally. The top XP earners averaged 4.2 cases per day — well above the community average of 1.7. What separated the top tier was not just volume but accuracy: every top-10 detective submitted their killer answer on the first attempt.
What the Top Solvers Have in Common
We analysed the solve patterns of the top 25 detectives this month and found three consistent habits:
They read the briefing before touching the grid. The fastest solvers in raw grid time are not always the fastest to submit. The ones who read first and search second have a 23% higher first-attempt success rate on the killer answer.
They scan diagonals in the first 90 seconds. Without exception, the top detectives clear diagonal words before horizontal or vertical ones.
They do not guess the method. They wait for all listed words to be found before reading the leftover letters. Partial reads lead to wrong guesses that cost XP and time.
The Case That Stumped Everyone
Case #118 in Volume 2 had the lowest first-attempt success rate in July at 31%. The case is set at a botanical garden — and the murder method is a plant-derived poison with a name that, in the grid, looks very similar to the name of the victim's assistant.
Over half of solvers who submitted on Case #118 named the assistant as the killer rather than the groundskeeper. Both names appear in the briefing with similar frequency. The tiebreaker — as always — is the leftover method, not the briefing alone. Solvers who let the method guide them got it right; those who went with instinct mostly did not.
August Challenge: Under 5 Minutes on Case #1
Starting August 1, we will be tracking a special badge for any detective who solves Volume 1, Case #1 (The Midnight Manor) in under 5 minutes with a correct first-attempt answer. It is not easy — the current average is 8 minutes — but the top detectives from July are already targeting it.
Play the case, beat the clock, and you will see the badge appear on your dashboard profile.
