Volume 2 Case Design Notes: What Changed and Why We Went Darker

Volume 1 established the format. 120 cases, each with a clear briefing, a solvable grid, and a murder method hidden in the leftover letters. Player feedback was overwhelmingly positive on the core mechanic — but experienced solvers finished it faster than we anticipated. The average completion time for all 120 cases was under three months of regular play.

For Volume 2, we had a clear mandate: go deeper, go harder, go darker. Not gratuitously — but with more moral complexity in the cases and more technical demand in the grids.

Volume 1 cases average 9 words per list. Volume 2 cases average 12. The extra three words per case do not just add time — they add misdirection. More words on the list means more potential murder methods to consider, more red herrings to navigate, and a denser grid that is harder to scan systematically.

The longest case in Volume 2 has 16 words on the list. In testing, even experienced Murdsearch solvers took an average of 22 minutes on that case. In Volume 1, nothing exceeded 13 minutes on average.

In Volume 1, suspects had simple names: BUTLER, SURGEON, COUNTESS. In Volume 2, we introduced compound identities: THE GROUNDSKEEPER, LADY ASHWORTH, THE NIGHT PORTER. These are harder to find in the grid because they span more cells, and they are harder to remember during the deduction phase because they are more specific.

The same logic applied to locations. "LIBRARY" became "EAST WING LIBRARY." "GARDEN" became "WALLED GARDEN." The specificity adds authenticity and difficulty simultaneously.

Volume 1 cases tend toward classic golden-age mystery settings: country manors, ocean liners, dinner parties. The murders are theatrical. Volume 2 moves into grittier territory: industrial accidents that were not accidents, domestic crimes staged as suicides, cold cases reopened decades later.

This shift was deliberate. Reader feedback from Volume 1 mentioned that some cases felt predictable because the settings suggested the killer type. A poisoning in a Victorian kitchen always implicates the cook. In Volume 2, we subverted those expectations — the setting is a misdirection as often as it is a clue.

Volume 1 grids are 15×15. Volume 2 grids are also 15×15, but with a higher word density — the listed words collectively cover more of the grid surface, which means fewer free cells and tighter leftover-letter constraints.

This required reworking the grid-generation algorithm. In Volume 1, some grids had slack — enough empty cells that the leftover letters had breathing room to form the method. In Volume 2, every cell is intentional. No slack. The tighter constraints forced us to cut roughly 20 planned methods that could not be encoded cleanly given the word lists we had chosen.

Volume 3 is in development. We are not ready to announce a release date, but we can share the core design change: cooperative cases. Two players, one grid, shared clue list, but each player sees different words highlighted. You will need to communicate to solve the case. It is the biggest mechanical shift since the series launched.
